What the assessment includes

Bloods and imaging together, because hormone levels alone do not tell the whole story:

  • Consultation with Dr Faiza Irshad
  • Pelvic ultrasound – womb lining and ovaries
  • FSH – the key marker of ovarian activity
  • Estradiol (E2) – your oestrogen level
  • LH – luteinising hormone
  • Prolactin (PRL)
  • TSH – thyroid, a common mimic of menopause symptoms
  • Progesterone
  • Results review visit with your doctor

Why hormones and a scan together

Hormones tell you the stage

FSH and estradiol show how your ovaries are working, and whether what you are feeling fits perimenopause, menopause, or something else entirely.

The scan checks the structure

The ultrasound looks at the womb lining and ovaries – picking up fibroids, cysts or a thickened lining that bloods can never show.

Thyroid rules out the mimic

An underactive thyroid causes tiredness, weight change, low mood and irregular periods. It is easily missed as menopause, and easily treated when found.

When to book

  • Hot flushes, night sweats or broken sleep
  • Periods becoming irregular, lighter, heavier or further apart
  • Mood changes, anxiety, low energy or difficulty concentrating
  • Dryness, discomfort or urinary changes
  • Any bleeding after your periods have stopped – please book promptly rather than waiting
  • You simply want to know where you stand before deciding anything

What happens after your results

At your results visit, Dr Faiza explains what your hormones and scan show, and what your options are – which may include lifestyle and symptom management, treating something the tests uncovered, or discussing whether hormone therapy is appropriate for you. Nothing is decided for you, and nothing is started without a full conversation about the benefits and risks in your case.

Please note: an ultrasound assesses the womb lining and ovaries and guides whether any further tests are advisable. It is not a cancer test and cannot confirm or exclude cancer. If your results or symptoms need further assessment, Dr Faiza will explain exactly what is recommended and why.

You are not imagining it

Menopause is a normal stage of life, but the symptoms are real, often go on for years, and are far more manageable than most women are told. Many go from doctor to doctor being handed a different explanation each time. One assessment, with a female specialist who takes the time to explain, usually answers most of it – and everything you discuss stays between you and your doctor.
